Tadkewali dal  

This delicious dal and some steamed rice are all you need to make to enjoy a delicious comforting meal.

Ingredients for tadkewali dal
• Split pigeon pea (toor dal)soaked, and boiled with enough water
• Oil 2 tablespoons
• Cumin seeds 1/2 tsp
• Mustard seeds 1/2 tsp
• Asafoetida a pinch
• Garlic cloves 7-8 (with skin) crushed
• Salt to taste
• 2 medium tomatoes chopped
• 2 green chillies round chopped
• Curry leaves
• Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
• Fresh coriander leaves chopped 1 tablespoon

Boil the dal with sufficient water till soft in a pressure cooker. (For 3-4 whistles). Mash and keep aside.

Heat the oil in a heavy bottomed pan. Add some crushed garlic with skin. Sauté until golden brown. Then, add mustard ,cumin seeds, a pinch of asafoetida and curry leaves. Continue to sauté. Next, add green chillies, chopped tomatoes and stir the mixture on a high flame.

Keep stirring on high flame to infuse the tadka flavour. Once the tomatoes are little softer, add turmeric powder and salt to taste. Then, add the mashed dal and cook on a high flame.


Lastly, add 2 cups of water and boil for 5 mins. Garnish with coriander leaves. Your dal is ready to be served!

Serve hot with rice or Phulkas or any side vegetables of your choice.
